PRINTZ HONOREE
This is a book well out of the ordinary, with an extremely dynamic plot and a really good story. To quote a Goodreads review, "this unforgettable story is about the ability for books to feed off the soul." Narrated by Death in the time period of World War Two, THE BOOK THIEF is about a girl named Liesel who is adopted by a kindly old man who frequently plays the accordion and a strict, commonly cussing woman. Liesel survives many dangerous ordeals, and prevails all the way through the very sad ending.

SOME CONTENT MAY NOT BE APPROPRIATE FOR YOUNGER CHILDREN
THE FAULT IN OUR STARS is sort of a philosophical book, but at the same time, provides an excellent story for readers to enjoy. THE FAULT IN OUR STARS is about a girl called Hazel who has a tumor and is not expected to survive her condition, despite a medicine which makes it better. Then, when Hazel gets involved in a romantic relationship with a kid called Augustus "Gus" Waters, things become a little bit more complicated. This book is great for anyone, despite age or other preferences. A must read.

CALDECOTT MEDAL
This book is the only novel ever to receive the Caldecott Medal - that's not to say it doesn't deserve it. A wonderful tale told both in the great novel and the fabulous pictures that accompany it, THE INVENTION OF HUGO CABRET is a delightful story about a boy who fixes clocks at a train station and discovers a very old secret, his courage, and a new friend in his adventures. THE INVENTION OF HUGO CABRET gets 9 stars; it greatly exceeds the movie based upon it.

BRIAN'S WINTER by Gary Paulsen

(S*9)
The sequel to the award-winning book HATCHET, the novel BRIAN'S WINTER is about central character Brian Robeson. As you would know if you had read HATCHET, Brian gets rescued. However, this book offers a strange thing: an alternative plotline in which Brian does NOT get recued and has to fend for himeslf in the cold and harsh winter. The story doesn't really happen, but it still gives yet another interesting insight on living in the wilderness. 9 stars.

BEGGING FOR CHANGE by Sharon G. Flake

(S*9)
A prodigious work, and exceedingly realistic, BEGGING FOR CHANGE is the second book in the series but probably the better out of the two. In this novel, young Raspberry's life got flipped upside down after her mother was attacked and her money, her precious money , got stolen. Is there a way to rectify her mistakes and fix other people's errors, or will Raspberry be a tramp, stuck for the rest of her life, begging for change? Read this book to find out.

CORETTA KING SCOTT AWARD
LOCKDOWN is a pretty good book mainly written to expose the many injustices faced in juvenile prison. In this novel, you follow the story of Reese, a juvenile delinquent who is offered a second chance, but struggles to meet his criteria to leave "juvie". LOCKDOWN may not be Walter Myer's best book, but it still provides decent enough insight to the world of gang members. This book is best for kids 10 and up, and contains minor inappropriate scenes.

A LONG WALK TO WATER by Linda Sue Park

(*8)
An excellently written story about two Third World children struggling desperately to survive in different time periods, A LONG WALK TO WATER by Linda Sue Park is a good book for any fans of historical reference and/or historical fiction. In one story, a girl called Nya faces many challenges to obtain water for her family, such as walking eight hours a day through scorching deserts. In the other story, a boy called Salva changes from a daydreaming schoolboy to a child hardened by war, forced to flee his home of South Sudan. Together, the stories of Nya and Salva create a great novel with few flaws.

THE LAST OF THE REALLY GREAT WHANGDOODLES by Julie Andrews
![Picture](/uploads/1/5/8/8/15888322/2764297.jpg?131)
(*8)
Despite the exceptionally long title, THE LAST OF THE REALLY GREAT WHANGDOODLES is a good book when you read it. Very similar to THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA, some kids are sucked into a parallel, magical world with both freinds, foes, wonders, obscenities. and more. Best for children ages 8 to 15, this book is virtually obscure but still a good novel well deserving of a couple hour's attention and the eight stars awarded to it.

This books has its ups and downs. A good plot, but it could have been better. Also, the flow just doesn't work for this book in some places. However, it's still a good book to pass the time with if you are bored, following the story of a manga-crazy girl and her friends who bring down a few dangerous art criminals. This was rated a low 8 stars after a lot of deliberation- the story just seems to drag on in some places. You should try this if you like art of any kind, especially manga.

THE EMERALD ATLAS by John Stephens
![Picture](/uploads/1/5/8/8/15888322/9418065.jpg?110)
(S*7)
THE EMERALD ATLAS is a decently good book, I guess. In this novel, three shunned and orphaned children find themselves inside a strange situation - traveling to the strangest places imaginable through time and space. THE EMERALD ATLAS has a lot of action and humor, and is probably best for fans of THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA. However, it isn't written with the necessary flair to make it truly exciting. Best for kids aged 8 to 14, a book tittering between iffy and good.
