1 BOOK OF THE YEAR
HIVE is surprisingly underrated. Barely anyone I know has heard of this spectacular six-book series. Written as beautifully as the HUNGER GAMES, but not nearly as well-known. With a superb plot, this book is slightly like HARRY POTTER, involving a school unbeknownst to the general public. Not only is the backdrop similar to HARRY POTTER, but the writing is talented enough to challenge J.K. Rowling. Once I began to read this book, I was captivated and immersed into the wonderful world and words of Otto Malpense and his friends. 10 stars.

1 BOOK OF THE MONTH
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is undoubtedly one of the best series of the 21st century. For me, reading it is like an art critic staring at one of Michelangelo's paintings. With wonderful, fast paced action throughout an interesting dystopian society, a fantastic plot, appropriate mindset of the character, and the sequels being just as good as the first one, this is, without hesitation, 10 stars.

This world famous series does not even require me to describe it, as all know its vast ring of fame. I often found myself reading this under the covers of my bed- so many times, in fact, that 5 of the 7 book bindings for Harry Potter I have are broken. Every book by J.K. Rowling is candy to the eyes, and I recommend it for all adventure seeking readers. Undoubtedly 10 stars.

THE HEROES OF OLYMPUS by Rick Riordan

1 BOOK OF THE MONTH
The HEROES OF OLYMPUS is probably Rick Riordan's greatest series. The drama, action, and fast paced situations makes it one of the series that I most frequently read, and the only incomplete series on my 10 star book list. Coming as a sequel series to PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS, it is a must read for fervent fans of Rick Riordan such as myself. With the arrival of the fourth book, it established itself as one of the best series in recent memory.

(*10)
Rick Riordan is one of the most talented authors that I know of. This talent is reflected in most of his books, and indeed, the PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS series. This may be the best narrative book I have ever read, with Percy Jackson casually employing humor along with his serious situations. Each character here is unique with conveying his or her emotions through their actions. A bunch of great reads, definitely a middle ten stars.

THE SECRETS OF THE IMMORTAL NICHOLAS FLAMEL by Michael Scott
![Picture](/uploads/1/5/8/8/15888322/2290325.jpg?177)
(*9)
This is a very well-written series that, not unlike all the other popular series, integrates the fantastical with the normal life. THE SECRETS OF THE IMMORTAL NICHOLAS FLAMEL has a riveting, on-the-edge-of-your-seat plot. The characters are perfect, immortal beings with magical powers and a lot of self-doubt. Michael Scott is a very proficient author whose books are a must read for fans of LORD OF THE RINGS and the like.

THE SECRET SERIES by Rafael "Pseudonymous Bosch" Simon

(*9)
An excellent series that should be censored at all times (joke) THE SECRET series follows Max-Ernest and Cassandra (those are fake names of course) in their quest to unravel the darkest secrets of alchemy before their evil enemies prevail. Of course, I should not even be telling you of this- it is apparently an UNclosely guarded secret. THE SECRET SERIES is great for readers of all ages and deserves 9 stars; a bunch of fantastic and intriguing novels.

GREGOR THE OVERLANDER by Suzanne Collins
![Picture](/uploads/1/5/8/8/15888322/1177143.jpg?354)
(*9)
The first series Suzanne Collins ever made, GREGOR THE OVERLANDER pales next to her later work, THE HUNGER GAMES, but still is an excellent series overall. Written about a boy who discovers that there is more activity underground than that which meets the eye, each novel in this saga is seat-gripping, exhilarating good stuff that should be read by anybody aged 8 and up. Well deserving of its nine stars, this series is a good read.

ARTEMIS FOWL by Eoin Colfer
![Picture](/uploads/1/5/8/8/15888322/1896021.jpg)
(*9)
Each book in this saga is terrific, centering around a criminal mastermind who discovered one hidden secret too many. The prose and the plot were fantastic (Eoin Colfer is very articulate and a good author), but in the end, I decided that this series didn't have that one spark to make it perfect. So I will have to settle by naming this the best of the 9 stars, an 8 book series I read at least once every three months. An excellent book for fantasy fans.

LORD OF THE RINGS by J.R.R Tolkien
![Picture](/uploads/1/5/8/8/15888322/4124168.jpg)
(*9)
The plot of this book series is superb - every fantasy geek's dream. Even the names are zany, both for locations and people, but crazy in a good way. J.R.R Tolkien put a lot of effort into this series, but the ancient English speak brings its legacy down slightly. Still, I would not pause to recommend this to any person seeking a nice time reading. If you are more of a movie fan, and if this were a movie reviews site, I would say that the movies are better than the books.

THE MYSTERIOUS BENEDICT SOCIETY by Trenton Lee Stewart
![Picture](/uploads/1/5/8/8/15888322/9122463.gif)
(*9)
This is a marvelous book for most intellectuals, with many interesting puzzles, characters, settings, and themes. THE MYSTERIOUS BENEDICT SOCIETY is a series I enjoy to read (apparently, so do some of my website's viewers) with the witty attitude of Constance Contraire, the marvelous mind of Sticky Washington, the cleverness of Kate Weatherall, and the Reynie Muldoon braveness. I would rate this book at a low nine stars.

DIVERGENT SERIES by Veronica Roth

(*9)
1 BOOK OF THE MONTH
The DIVERGENT saga is one of those book series where the first one is the best, the second one is okay, and the third one is lacking of good quality and boring. Set in the future world where the government is trying to "cure" the human race by separating off entire societies to participate in a program where the rules are comparable to the ones from THE GIVER. An excellent saga for teenagers.

THE LORIEN LEGACIES is a great series, but the first book by far is the best. Written about a group of aliens brought to Earth to ensure their race does not become extinct, THE LORIEN LEGACIES is delightful, written in a format that is extremely pleasing and fast-paced whilst adventurous to the reader. These books are fantastic all around, and should be read by anyone of any age.

THEODORE BOONE by John Grisham
![Picture](/uploads/1/5/8/8/15888322/9798348.jpg?92)
(*9)
The THEODORE BOONE saga is fantastic for civil justice geeks, or anybody aspiring to be a lawyer. Though it doesn't have action like other popular series, it's written in a way that makes you want to continue despite the plot line. In this epic saga, a kid called Theo strives to uphold justice while fighting corrupt bureaucrats, thieves, murderers, and kidnappers, all eventually beating them in a highly intellectual manner. Well worthy of the occasional read, at 9 stars.

LEGEND TRILOGY by Marie Lu
![Picture](/uploads/1/5/8/8/15888322/1386427281.png)
(*9)
Yet another series that is rapidly hurtling itself into the viewpoint of the public eye (it rose from 7 to 9 stars in two months). At the risk of sounding like a connoisseur, this book gave me reminiscence of the particularly riveting HUNGER GAMES trilogy. I enjoyed reading the first two books (I haven't gotten the thirds yet) and would not pause to loan this book to a HUNGER GAMES fan. Marie Lu is an author with a lot of talent and promise. Middle 9 stars.

DIARY OF A WIMPY KID by Jeff Kinney
![Picture](/uploads/1/5/8/8/15888322/1395262341.jpg)
(*8)
The DIARY OF A WIMPY KID series is very well-known and popular in America. Featuring an unlucky middle school boy who struggles to establish himself as someone "cool" in society, Greg is a slacking and lazy child who is only truly good at video games. Though the later books are more slower paced and not as progressive as the earlier ones, the entire series is good and consistent. Best for any middle schooler (the obvious target audience), but that's not at all a limit. High eight stars.

THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA by C.S. Lewis
![Picture](/uploads/1/5/8/8/15888322/1077758.jpg?214)
(*8)
This series reminds me of LORD OF THE RINGS, just less action. Also set in an elaborate fantasy land, with just as interesting characters and plots, this is a great series for younger readers. I find that you can really immerse yourself into this world. Each novel is different in its own unique way, separated by time and space for every book. However, it did not have that perfect element that no mediocre reader such as myself knows how to duplicate, so I give it 8 stars.

A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS by Daniel "Lemony Snicket" Handler
![Picture](/uploads/1/5/8/8/15888322/848869.jpg?173)
(*8)
When I was younger, I didn't appreciate this series too much, and the same goes for when I became older. But if you read this saga at the golden age of about ten, you can maximize your experience with this series, to maybe even make it a nine starred saga. Lemony Snicket tells a very dramatic story, all while defining every complicated word he writes in each book, so as to make better understandable for younger readers. A good series worth at least middle eight stars.

THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN by Herge
![Picture](/uploads/1/5/8/8/15888322/9273386.jpg?123)
(*8)
An excellent series that I was debating should it be put into comics or series sections. I asked myself this because it is a bunch of great books in comic format. TINTIN is about a young boy and his dog who solve mysteries, crimes, and unravel shocking conspiracies. THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN are more than good; they are great. Best for children aged 8 to 20, THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN are a must-read. This comic was moved down to 8 stars after some reader input.

ASTERIX by Rene Goscinny

(*8)
I placed this review right below THE ADVENTURE OF TINTIN because they are indeed similar in many ways; both series and comic strips that were placed in the Book Series section. ASTERIX is mainly about a Gaulish warrior in the time of the Roman occupation of modern France and his adventures with his friend Obelix and a few others on occasion. ASTERIX is worthy of multiple reads; for it makes intellectual jokes and is always humorous to the reader.

THE KANE CHRONICLES by Rick Riordan
![Picture](/uploads/1/5/8/8/15888322/4092234.jpg?206)
(*8)
Yet another one of Rick Riordan's masterpieces, though not as flavorful as his other PERCY JACKSON series. Each book in this trilogy had been carefully researched and painstakingly made, narrated by Carter and Sadie Kane in a voice that is seemingly appropriate to teenage Egyptian magicians. If you like Rick Riordan's other works, you should try this trilogy. Some sources say that this saga will be integrated with the Greek/Roman world as well.

TIMMY FAILURE by Stephan Pastis
![Picture](/uploads/1/5/8/8/15888322/1388082785.png)
(*8)
TIMMY FAILURE is the byproduct of PEARLS BEFORE SWINE author Stephan Pastis. One of its best qualities is that the lead character is so stupid, it makes you crack up and roll on the floor. TIMMY FAILURE is hilarious and has a good plot, as Total Failure, inc. tries to stop their supposedly evil adversary in a detective-style match of wits. Best for children 8 to 18 - not for smaller kids but too silly for adults.

ORIGAMI YODA by Tom Angleberger
![Picture](/uploads/1/5/8/8/15888322/1398816900.png)
(*8)
A humorous saga which is worth reading to pass the time or to lighten the mood, the ORIGAMI YODA series is interesting to read. Told from a variety of viewpoints and hand writings, each story expresses itself perfectly and contributes to the overall effect of fighting the FunTime Menace, some novels building up to it and others raising the climax. However, the writing is somewhat mediocre. These are good books worthy of a purchase for people aged 8 to 12.

THE FOURTH STALL by Chris Rylander
![Picture](/uploads/1/5/8/8/15888322/1394743246.png)
(*8)
THE FOURTH STALL series is a blatant parody on the GODFATHER trilogy, but that doesn't mean it's not good, featuring two young entrepreneurs who solve people's problems, despite it sometimes exceeding the rules. A nice, fast paced trilogy that is very consistent and interesting, this series is best for children aged seven and up. Awarded eight stars mostly for the fact that I couldn't put any of these books down.

THE 39 CLUES by Various Authors
![Picture](/uploads/1/5/8/8/15888322/1490414.jpg)
(*8)
Written by a wide variety of successful authors, the 39 CLUES is action-packed to the brim and is a nice read if you're looking for something new. After an eccentric old lady dies, she leaves her relatives two chances: take away a million dollars or infinite power through a quest that spans the continents. However, it seems as if this series was mainly written to sell merchandise and bonus packs off of. At 8 stars, best for children 8-14.

ALEX RIDER by Anthony Horowitz
![Picture](/uploads/1/5/8/8/15888322/7193376.jpg?201)
(*8)
The plot is nice, but this series could be written by a more proficient author. Alex Rider's mindset does not match his actions. However, the plot for this series is pretty good, with the standard spy save-the-world stuff. At heart, Anthony Horowitz will always be a screenplay writer, known for writing brief and cliched stories. These books are the best for action loving fans. Each book in this series is mediocre, but readable. Low 8 stars.

THE FUDGE SERIES by Judy Blume
![Picture](/uploads/1/5/8/8/15888322/9328806.jpg?138)
(*8)
Judy Blume's FUDGE series is excellent for younger kids. Written eloquently in the eye of a skeptically logical older brother named Peter and his viewpoints on life, this series tells the story of a crazy kid called Fudge and his antics, which seem ridiculous even for a kindergartner. Best for annoyed kids with younger siblings or anyone looking for a good book aged 6 to 12. It earned a low eight stars after careful deliberation.

EVIL GENIUS SERIES by Catherine Jinks
![Picture](/uploads/1/5/8/8/15888322/1241158.jpg?90)
(*7)
EVIL GENIUS is best in the fist couple books; in the second and third novel the flair and excitement starts to wane. That's not saying its a bad series - it's acceptably passable. No complaints but no praise is the best way to put it. This series is mainly about a kid called Cadel who tries to live an innocent life (if you don't count the hacking) but is constantly oppressed against his nemesis, a person called Prosper English. The moral of this saga? It takes one genius to bring down the other.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SERIES by James Patterson
![Picture](/uploads/1/5/8/8/15888322/1399323675.png)
(*7)
The MIDDLE SCHOOL saga is about boy called Rafael, or Rafe for short. Rafe has a large problem of chronic misfortunes in and out of school. His life flip-flops, bad at first, then he overcomes the problem and becomes the hapless hero at the end. With one book by his sister detailing what REALLY happens, this series creates an interesting and rarely (but occasionally) humorous environment and is good for any kid enjoying stuff like THE DIARY OF A WIMPY KID series in grades 6 to 8.

KID PRESIDENT by Daniel Gutman
![Picture](/uploads/1/5/8/8/15888322/1387734073.png)
(*7)
Daniel Gutman has an eloquent and expressive writing style not unlike those of Andrew Clements, Steve Gibbs, John Grisham, and Eva Ibbotson. The KID PRESIDENT saga obviously was extensively researched and planned out. However, those are the only good things you can say about it (it's not very good). Focused on the plot of a kid who overcomes obstacles to get office and stay in office with the help of his friend Lane Brainard, this series is worthy of a library loan and is good for any kid up to age 14 or so, though both books are overtly cliched and generally cheesy in some places.

80AD by Aiki Flinthart

There are loads of books and movies about people getting sucked into video games, so this series may seem a little cliche. It's free on Kindle, so it makes a good deal and deserves a read now and then. Written about two kids called Jade and Phoenix who undergo a lot of character development and have to stop an evil video game character from taking over both worlds, this saga is worthy of a reviewing here and there despite its flaws in the work. Greatest part? It's free on Kindle.

THE GUARDIANS OF GA'HOOLE by Kathryn Lasky

Somewhat cheesy, somewhat cliche, but still a good enough series over all. THE GUARDIANS OF GA'HOOLE is basically about a bunch of owls who fight with each other and cause a general fracas, similar to Erin Hunter's WARRIORS except with birds and a little bit better in general. This is a good series for animal fans, or anybody fancying something to read, ages 8 to 14.

INKWORLD by Cornelia Funke

INKHEART might make a good movie, but in a book, it's only okay, and the sequels are even worse. It has a nice plot, but the flair of writing is kind of boring. However, it is quite interesting to read about books coming to life from simple words, so this series has its ups and downs. Cornelia Funke has produced better, all in all, but this is mediocre and good at the same time, with a high seven stars appointed to it.

BIG NATE SERIES by Lincoln Pierce

The novelized adaption of a comic strip, the BIG NATE series is strikingly funny and painfully lifelike. This series is a 7-book saga about a goofy but aspiring cartoonist kid who messes up a lot unintentionally. While lacking components to make these truly good novels, BIG NATE is fun and easy to flip through if you are bored. Recommended for ages 8 and up. This series is a high seven stars, for reasons obvious upon further examination.

THE VLADIMIR TOD CHRONICLES by Heather Brewer

A good read, but very cliche characters. This saga reminded me of the TWILIGHT series. In this series, Vladimir Tod struggles to be a decent vampire while coexisting with society. The vampire's thoughts and actions are portrayed very well, perfectly intermingling puberty and vampires into a very interesting set of stories. High 7 stars, without a fraction of a doubt- it's good, but not exceptional.

INHERITANCE CYCLE by Christopher Paolini

Christopher Paolini is a budding young author who, despite the fact that he has produced a best selling series at an early age, still has much to learn about literature. However, the plot for this series is fantastic (featuring a teen who discovers much about the secret worlds of magic with the help of his dragon, Saphira) and innovative. The INHERITANCE CYCLE is a series well worth reading for fans of J.R.R. Tolkien and other fantasy authors.

TWILIGHT by Stephanie Meyer

WARNING May not be appropriate for younger children
Well written. Stephanie Meyers employs a great vocabulary into her books. However, I believe that the main plot is a little off (apologies to the series' die-hard fans), and like THE VLADIMIR TOD CHRONICLES, very cliche. It's predictable, except for a couple chapters in the final book, which is undoubtedly the best in the series. Recommended for vampire romance fans. 7 Stars.

I FUNNY by James Patterson

Let's face it: James Patterson is just not a children's author. It seems the younger the age he is targeting for, the more atrocious his books are. I FUNNY is about a middle school boy called Jamie Grimm, who, despite being confined to a wheelchair, wants to be a stand-up comedian. These books are not really worthy for a dedicated read; I'd place it at a low 7 stars. Good for middle schoolers.

CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS by Dav Pilkey

Crude and vulgar humor, but at the same time, effective for impressing an army of children. CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS tells the story of the misadventures of kids George and Harold, who morph their evil principal into a zany but funny superhero named Captain Underpants (obviously), who ends up doing all kinds of very strange things, from battling toilets to traveling through time. This series is best for kids aged 6-10, but that border can be expanded a little. 7 stars.
